West Tisbury Near Net Zero house

The site is a 2 acre parcel of undeveloped land along a dirt road in relatively rural West Tisbury Martha’s Vineyard. The clients wished to relocate to the Vineyard full time in a net zero passive solar house with their family of 5. Every inch of the 2200 SF home was studied, utilized and located per the program and orientation of the sun. A distinct master bedroom wing located to the west of the main house has a small scale which refers to the local small cottages of Oak Bluffs located nearby.   The design incorporates the use of local materials and traditional front porches on the exterior with a large south facing dormer on the south to bring in light and provide optimum orientation for solar panels. The house was sited to maximize passive solar, and to limit the disturbance of the existing site as much as possible. The resulting design approaches net-zero, in a practical and cost effective manner.
