Cape Air

Cape Air, an employee-owned business committed to 'greening' the way that it does business, including retrofitting their corporate headquarters located adjacent to Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, MA recently installed a 258 kW photovoltaic array to offset electricity usage. Knowing that conservation and energy-efficiency would only improve their results, they approached A3 Architects, Inc. of Brewster to assist with upgrading their existing offices to be more energy efficient and comfortable for employees while reducing the energy load A3 Architects, Inc. with Barnes Building and Management have partnered to provide a Design-Build solution that addresses the West Elevation, the only exterior side of the existing office core which is located entirely within the hangar space. A3 Architects designed a new skin of foam metal panels that will provide a continuous insulated barrier, without thermal break, therefore providing a superior energy performance. Existing insulation and Kalwall, translucent glazing system, with little r-value left will be replaced, in some areas, with new high-performance versions. New Pella windows and metal panels will be installed with new signage, facing the west, visible from Rte 132 will make a bold statement for the airline. These hangar upgrades will hopefully inform other similar metal building projects with opportunities to create a high performance building envelope.
